Gilgamesh Mineral Processing (Pty) Ltd, “Gilgamesh”, is a company set up by Olmek Mineral Beneficiation (Pty) Ltd (Olmek is a 100% BEE Company ) with the aim to establish and operate a South-African based, Chemical and Metallurgical Production Facility for the manufacturing of high-tech, metal-derived chemicals and oxides obtained by beneficiation of primarily cobalt and other minerals relevant. Due to their high importance, the experience of the company in cobalt, copper and nickel processing technologies and the abundance of these minerals in Central and Southern Africa, the base metals cobalt, nickel and copper were chosen.
Gilgamesh will endeavour to produce high-value-added chemicals and oxides for export to the world markets, focussing primarily on products and intermediates crucial for the manufacturing of Lithium-Ion batteries, ceramics, pigments and other high-value-added materials, at the same time becoming a major actor in the beneficiation of South and Southern African mineral resources.End uses of cobalt chemicals

Cobalt in batteries
About 50% of the cobalt produced globally is found in rechargeable batteries, a vital technology for a sustainable future. Cobalt is a critical raw material.Applications are in Portable devices - Mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cutting tools; E-mobility - Electric vehicles, electric trains and bikes; Stationary - Renewable energy power stations and home storage.
Cobalt in Pigments and Oxides
Demand for cobalt in pigments is currently estimated at approximately 11% of total global demand, with 90% of this being direct pigment application, and the rest for decolorizing.
Cobalt in Catalysts
Catalysts provide a major market for cobalt (in particular cobalt salts) and the estimated industry in 2006-2010 was in the order of 12% of total cobalt consumption. Cobalt acetate and cobalt nitrate are the most important cobalt salts used in the production of cata- lysts

The catalyst used to activate this process is a cobalt based system.
